 What Is Skuul?
--------------

Skuul is an open-source school management application created by [Marvellous Ifezue](https://github.com/yungifez). Version 3.0, released on October 16, 2026, is a ground-up rewrite targeting **Laravel 13** and **Livewire 4**. A single installation can serve one school or an entire group of schools, handling everything from admissions to finance under one roof.

Key Features in Skuul 3.0
-------------------------

Here is a breakdown of what ships out of the box:

- **Multi-organization and multi-campus** — one installation holds multiple organizations, each with multiple campuses.
- **Admissions and guardians** — waitlist management and guardian links that connect parent accounts to learner profiles.
- **Assessment** — course offerings, gradebooks, exam schedules, and a reviewer-approval step before results are published.
- **Official documents** — report cards and transcripts generated from approved results.
- **Finance** — a ledger for payments, refunds, and student credit, controlled by financial periods.
- **Optional campus tools** — discipline, wellbeing, staff operations, a campus calendar, boarding, a library, clubs, and bulk imports. Each tool is toggled per campus.
- **Report exports** — CSV, XLSX, and PDF files generated in the background.
- **Operations** — scheduled encrypted database backups, a weekly restore rehearsal, health endpoints, and the `skuul:release-readiness` and `skuul:update` Artisan commands.

Roles, Permissions, and Campuses
--------------------------------

Skuul uses **Spatie Permission** with team-scoped roles, so a user's permissions are tied to a specific campus. The installer seeds eight default roles:

- `platform-admin`, `organization-admin`, `admin`
- `teacher`, `accountant`, `librarian`
- `student`, `parent`

A campus can clone any role to create a custom variant (for example, an admissions-office role). Learners can transfer between campuses, and inter-campus record requests require explicit approval.

Family Portal
-------------

Students and guardians access a dedicated portal showing published results, attendance records, timetables, invoices, documents, and notices. Families can also submit requests directly to the campus. Each campus controls which portal pages are visible, and pages tied to an optional tool (such as the Library page) remain hidden until that tool is enabled.

Known Limitations in V3
-----------------------

The official documentation is transparent about current gaps:

- **No public REST API** — API tokens are disabled.
- **Stripe integration is incomplete** — the payment channel exists, but checkout and callback routes are not wired up. Families cannot pay invoices through the portal; staff record payments manually.
- **No staff appraisal workflow.**
- **Grade calculator edge case** — blank, missing, absent, or incomplete marks can be counted as zero. Review marks carefully before publishing results.

Schools that need online fee collection or external system sync will need to build those integrations themselves.

Upgrading From V2
-----------------

V3 replaces the V2 data model entirely. Migrations drop legacy exam results, grading systems, and gradebooks without a course offering, and **rollbacks will not restore them**. The recommended upgrade path:

1. Take a full database backup and save your uploaded files and `APP_KEY`.
2. Run the upgrade against a copy of your production data first.
3. Only migrate production once you are confident the upgrade is clean.

Installation
------------

Requirements: **PHP 8.4.1+**, **Node.js 24**, **MySQL 8**, and **Redis**. The project uses Laravel Sail for local development.

```bash
git clone --branch v3.0.2 https://github.com/yungifez/skuul.git skuul
```

Follow the [official installation guide](https://skuul.org/current/getting-started/installation) after cloning. A [live demo](https://demo.skuul.org/) is available with one-click logins for staff, student, and family roles. It resets hourly and has deletions disabled.

Skuul is **MIT licensed**. Source code is on [GitHub](https://github.com/yungifez/skuul) and full documentation is at [skuul.org](https://skuul.org/).

Takeaways
---------

- Skuul 3.0 is a production-ready Laravel 13 + Livewire 4 school management system.
- Multi-campus, multi-organization support is built in from the start.
- Spatie Permission handles team-scoped roles cleanly.
- Online payments and a REST API are not yet available — plan accordingly.
- The V2-to-V3 migration is destructive; always back up before upgrading.

 Frequently asked questions
---------------------------

  What are the server requirements to run Skuul 3.0?Skuul 3.0 requires PHP 8.4.1 or later, Node.js 24, MySQL 8, and Redis. The project ships with Laravel Sail to simplify local setup.

   Can Skuul handle multiple schools in a single installation?Yes. One Skuul installation supports multiple organizations, and each organization can have multiple campuses. Roles and permissions are scoped per campus using Spatie Permission.

   Does Skuul support online fee payments out of the box?Not yet. A Stripe payment channel is present in V3, but the checkout and callback routes are not connected. Staff must record payments manually, and families cannot pay invoices through the portal in the current release.
