Filament v4 Custom Table Columns: Building Reusable, Typed Column Components
=============================================================================

Go beyond built-in columns in Filament v4. Learn to build fully typed, reusable custom table columns with render logic, state resolution, and proper Blade integration.

Why Custom Columns?
-------------------

Filament v4 ships with `TextColumn`, `BadgeColumn`, `ImageColumn`, and a handful of others. They cover 80% of cases. The remaining 20% — composite data, domain-specific formatting, interactive indicators — require you to build your own. Reaching for `->html()` and dumping markup into a closure is a code smell. A proper custom column class is testable, reusable across panels, and respects Filament's fluent API contract.

Anatomy of a Custom Column
--------------------------

Every Filament table column extends `Filament\Tables\Columns\Column`. The minimum surface you need to implement is a Blade view. State resolution and extra configuration are layered on top.

```php
// app/Filament/Tables/Columns/StatusBadgeColumn.php
namespace App\Filament\Tables\Columns;
use Filament\Tables\Columns\Column;
class StatusBadgeColumn extends Column
{
    protected string $view = 'filament.tables.columns.status-badge-column';
    protected string | \Closure | null $colorResolver = null;
    public function color(string | \Closure $color): static
    {
        $this->colorResolver = $color;
        return $this;
    }
    public function getColor(): string
    {
        return $this->evaluate($this->colorResolver) ?? 'gray';
    }
}
```

The `evaluate()` method — inherited from `Filament\Support\Concerns\EvaluatesClosures` — handles both plain values and closures that receive the current record. This is the idiomatic Filament pattern; always prefer it over manual `instanceof \Closure` checks.

The Blade View
--------------

Filament resolves the view from the `$view` property. Place it at `resources/views/filament/tables/columns/status-badge-column.blade.php`.

```blade
@php
    $state = $getState();
    $color = $getColumn()->getColor();
    $colorMap = [
        'success' => 'bg-green-100 text-green-800',
        'danger'  => 'bg-red-100 text-red-800',
        'warning' => 'bg-yellow-100 text-yellow-800',
        'gray'    => 'bg-gray-100 text-gray-700',
    ];
    $classes = $colorMap[$color] ?? $colorMap['gray'];
@endphp
    {{ $state }}
```

The view receives `$getState()`, `$getRecord()`, `$getColumn()`, and the full set of Filament-injected helpers. Never inject the record directly into the column class — always pull it through the view's injected closures to stay compatible with Filament's deferred rendering pipeline.

Wiring State Resolution
-----------------------

By default, `getState()` resolves the column's `name` attribute against the record. For computed or relationship-derived values, override `getStateUsing()`:

```php
public function resolvedFromRelationship(): static
{
    $this->getStateUsing(function ($record) {
        return $record->latestOrder?->status?->label();
    });
    return $this;
}
```

Or let the consumer pass a closure at call-site — the standard `->getStateUsing()` fluent method is already available on the base `Column` class.

Using the Column in a Resource
------------------------------

```php
use App\Filament\Tables\Columns\StatusBadgeColumn;
public static function table(Table $table): Table
{
    return $table->columns([
        StatusBadgeColumn::make('status')
            ->label('Order Status')
            ->color(fn ($record) => match ($record->status) {
                'paid'      => 'success',
                'cancelled' => 'danger',
                'pending'   => 'warning',
                default     => 'gray',
            })
            ->sortable()
            ->searchable(),
    ]);
}
```

Because `StatusBadgeColumn` extends `Column`, all built-in modifiers — `sortable()`, `searchable()`, `toggleable()`, `tooltip()` — work without any extra code.

Packaging for Reuse
-------------------

If the column is shared across multiple panels or packages, register the view namespace in a service provider:

```php
$this->loadViewsFrom(__DIR__.'/../resources/views', 'my-plugin');
```

Then set `protected string $view = 'my-plugin::tables.columns.status-badge-column';` in the column class. Consumers get the column without caring about view paths.

Takeaways
---------

- Extend `Filament\Tables\Columns\Column` and set `$view`; everything else is optional.
- Use `$this->evaluate()` for any property that should accept a closure — it handles record injection automatically.
- Pull record data inside the Blade view via `$getRecord()` or `$getState()`, not via constructor injection.
- All built-in column modifiers (`sortable`, `searchable`, `toggleable`) are inherited for free.
- Namespace your views when distributing as a package to avoid path collisions.

Frequently asked questions
---------------------------

  Can I use Livewire actions inside a custom Filament v4 column view?Not directly inside the column Blade partial — columns are rendered as static HTML within the table loop. For interactive behaviour, use a Filament table Action attached to the row, or a custom column that renders an Alpine.js component for client-side interactivity without a Livewire round-trip.

   How do I make my custom column sortable on a computed value?Pass a closure to `->sortable()` that receives the query builder and sort direction, e.g. `->sortable(query: fn ($query, $direction) => $query->orderBy('computed\_column', $direction))`. This works identically to built-in columns because the base `Column` class handles the callback.
